James Maton
TrustSTFC Lawyer
Who are you?
Grew up as a Town fan in Chippenham. Married with two daughters.
What’s your day job?
Disputes partner in an international law firm.
How long have you been a Swindon fan?
First match in 1985 (0-0 v Southampton at home in the League Cup). So, terrifyingly, getting on for 40 years. It’s been a rollercoaster.
Why did you join the STFC trust board ?
I provide legal advice to the board (I am not a board member). I was first asked to help when the Trust was established, and have helped-out since then.
What expertise do you bring to the Trust board?
Pro bono (free!) practical legal advice. There have been a few issues in recent years that needed legal input….
What’s your vision for the football team on the pitch?
Get to and stabilise in the Championship. Then dream.
What’s your proudest moment as a Swindon fan?
On the pitch, the final whistle in the play-off final against Leicester (or the 6-4 come-back win at Birmingham, I was there). Off the pitch, just starting the season in 2021 with a proper squad after such a huge collective effort to save our club.
Who has been your favourite ever Swindon player and Manager?
The whole squad that won promotion in 1989/90, and had it so unfairly taken away from them! Ossie as its Manager.
What’s your overall vision for Swindon Town football club?
A debt-free and community focused Championship+ team (Men and Ladies), for Swindon and the whole of Wiltshire. Playing in a modernised and full County Ground fully behind the team.
